Hunchouen – Guatemala
Huehuetenango | Tajumuco | Smallholder Collective
At Rise & Grind, we’re proud to showcase coffees that are rooted in community, culture, and impact. Hunchouen comes from a collective of 550 smallholder producers in the Tajumuco region of Huehuetenango, in the northwestern highlands of Guatemala. Established in 1970, this network of independent farmers has built a legacy of quality coffee grown with care and tradition.
What makes this coffee even more meaningful is its impact. For every 24kg bag we purchase from the importers, a contribution is made to the MAIA Impact School — an educational initiative empowering young Indigenous women through access to transformative education. Supporting this coffee means supporting future generations.
Why the Name Hunchouen?
Hunchouen takes its name from Mayan mythology. In the Popol Vuh, Hunchouen and his brother Hunbatz were gifted artists — dancers, musicians, painters, sculptors, jewellers, and masters of craft. Their story tells of transformation into monkeys, and in Mayan culture, the howler monkey became a symbol of creativity, artistry, and cultural expression.
For us at Rise & Grind, that symbolism resonates. Coffee is craft. It’s artistry. It’s something created by skilled hands at origin and carefully roasted here to honour that work.
Hunchouen represents heritage, skill, and community — from the highlands of Guatemala to your cup.
