The Argopuro Volcano region in East Java is famous for its exceptional coffee production. With fertile volcanic soil and high elevations, the area offers a picturesque Javanese landscape. In recent years, there has been a shift towards Arabica coffee, leading to the emergence of micro-lots and innovative processing methods.
Pak Muhlisin, a visionary producer, founded the Pokmas Walida Cooperative to promote quality improvement and new processing techniques. Raised near Argopuro, Muhlisin studied agriculture and gained expertise at the Bogor Farming Institute. He returned home in 2012, building connections with Jakarta's roasters to secure better coffee prices.
The cooperative, with about 200 producers, cultivates coffee along with other crops and cattle. Meticulous handpicking and processing take place at the Pokmas Walida wet mill, ensuring top-quality coffee. Muhlisin also aims to improve local education, allocating funds from coffee sales to enhance the school.
Muhlisin's youth and innovative methods have inspired fellow producers and attracted local roasters. Supported by Belift, a coalition of coffee professionals, Muhlisin and the cooperative uplift Indonesian producers by showcasing their work and introducing new processing techniques. The future of Indonesian coffee shines brighter, benefiting coffee-producing communities nationwide.
